Top 5 Carpet Stains

Here are the Top 5 Most Common Carpet Stains According to Customers

The results are in for the top 5 most common carpet stains that our customers deal with in keeping their carpets and rugs clean.

First, and sort of a surprise, was pet urine. We all love our pets, but sometimes accidents can happen. This is frequently a problem as pets get older and have more trouble waiting when they have to go to the bathroom. Also, if pets are ill as a result of sickness or aging, urinating on carpets can become a regular occurrence. This can cause stains and odors in the carpet that are difficult to remove without a deep steam cleaning.

Next up: coffee. We all rush out of the house at times, and grabbing that morning cup of coffee as we run out the door can turn into a big spill. While coffee isn’t too hard to soak up from a carpet, it can stain lighter colored carpets or rugs. With the amount of rushing people do these days, myself included, it is no wonder that the morning coffee occasionally doesn’t make it out the door!

Ranking third in our list of common carpet stains is wine. Red wine, to be exact. This can be the result of a dinner party where a guest spills wine on your dining room carpet. The poor guest is mortified and apologizes as you sprint for the baking soda. If a small amount of wine has been spilled and you are able to soak it up in time, you may be able to prevent a stain. If your carpet has been treated with a stain guard, even better. If not, you may be left with a stain that a steam cleaning can handle.

In fourth place on our list of common stains is soda. Kids can spill a lot of soda in the house. One minute they could be playing video games in the living room and the next minute the soda (or juice) they were drinking is all over the new carpet. Again, depending on several factors, a stain may or may not result. However, we do get many calls from parents about spilled soda.

Our fifth most common carpet stain is from food. Maybe your friends are over watching the football game and eating pizza, or pasta, or some food with a tomato sauce. Or, it is Thanksgiving and Aunt Rose accidentally spilled the turkey gravy. Sauces can leave stains, especially when they are a little greasy. Grease can be tough to get out of the fibers of a carpet.

Curious about what came in sixth? Of course I’ll share that with you, and you may be surprised to find out that the sixth most common stain is from rust. How? It happens a lot. You might leave a metal tool lying around, or have an old metal filing cabinet in your house for storage. You could try a little dish soap and water to remove the stain. That could do the trick for you.
